Some people will do just about anything to save money. And I am one of them. Take my family’s last vacation. It was my six-year-old son’s winter break form school ,and we were heading home form Fort Lauderdale after a weeklong trip. The flight was overbooked, and Delta, the airline, offered us $400 per person in credits to give up our seats and leave the next day. I had meeting in New York, So I had to get back . But that didn't mean my husband and my son couldn't stay. I took my nine-month-old and took off for home.

The next day my husband and son were offered more credits to take an even later flight. Yes, I encouraged一okay, ordered-them to wait it out at the airport, to "earn" more Delta Dollars. Our total take: $1,600. Not bad, huh?

Now some people may think I'm a bad mother and not such a great wife either. But as a big-time bargain hunter, I know the value of a dollar. And these days, a good deal is some-timething few of us can afford to pass up.

I've made living looking for the best deals and exposing the worst tricks. I have been the consumer reporter of NBC's Today show for over a decade. I have written a couple of books including one titled Tricks of the Trade: A Consumer Survival Guide. And I really do what I believe in.

I tell you this because there is no shame in getting your money’s worth. I’m also tightfisted when it comes to shoes, clothes for my children, and expensive restaurants. But I wouldn't hesitate to spend on a good haircut. It keeps its longer, and it's the first thing people notice. And I will also spend on a classic piece of furniture. Quality lasts.

To celebrate the end of our exams, my friends and I went to a fast food restaurant. We ordered 26 hamburgers and Coca Colar at the counter. When our 27 food came, I started walking towards an empty table. By bad luck, my purse strap(带子) got caught 28 on a chair and the tray(托盘) that I was holding slipped from 29 my hands and went flying in the air. The tray, and its contents, 30 fell on a man who was just about to 31 take a bite of his sandwich. I stared, greatly 32 shocked , as the drinks soaked(浸湿) his white shirt.

Then I 33 closed my eyes and prepared myself for his burst of 34 anger . Instead, he said “It’s OK” to 35 comfort me before he disappeared into washroom.

Still shaky and unsure 36 what to do next, my friends and I went to a table and sat there, trying our best to look 37 calm . A moment later, the man came out of the washroom and 38 approached our table. My heart almost stopped 39 beating . I though he was going to ask for my father’ s 40 number and call him.

To my surprise, he merely smiled at us, handed us some cash and said, “ 41 Buy yourself new hamburgers.” He then walked 42 away without even finishing his food.

He could have made what was already an uncomfortable situation worse, 43 but he chose a different way and gave us a reason to believe that there is still 44 kindness in this world. I’ll never 45 forget his actions.

我发现我和四个孩子在路上走,a baby lamb and nothing but my everlasting optimism to see me through(我的一只没有和任何东西在一起的小羊羔一直不厌其烦地用乐观的神情上下打量着我)。

How good is a human's number sense? It's not very good. For example, babies about fourteen months old almost always notice if something is taken away from a ___13___ group. But when the number goes beyond three or four, the children are __14___ fooled.

Michael Greenberg是一个很受欢迎的纽约人;他被称为“手套” Greenberg;他的公文箱里总是带着一些手套;

第二部分(para.3-5)

In winter;looks around;stops;gives them a pair;looking for;know him;his behavior;don't know him;don't realize;

第三部分(para.6)

Michael's father;helped the poor;made everyone happier;feels;A pair of gloves;make a big difference

17.D。根据下文所描述的赠送手套的情况,以及30空前出现的“many poor New Yorkers”和33空后面出现的“the poor”,可知选D。

20.A。下文提到“who look at the sidewalk”,和“He looks around”等,这些都是人的行为表现(act)。

22.B。下文出现了“someone;them;more people”,可知他在看人(people)。

35.A。后半句有but转折,且有“make a big difference”,根据对比关系可推知选small。

On that afternoon, 39 the math teacher started to introduce difficult concepts, dark clouds covered the sky and the storm set in. Hard though she tried to make the kid, 40 , the thunder won the battle for their attention. No one 41 the concepts except for Joe. He understood them and answered all the questions correctly. The teacher patted him on the back, and told him to go around to the other, and explain how he had managed it. 42 by his new found success. Joe moved quickly throughout the room.

第一部分(para.1)

all signs pointed to success; turned out;the fourth grade;struggled day and night

第二部分(para.2--3)

Math teacher;difficult concepts; dark clouds covered the sky;the thunder won the battle;except for Joe;patted him on the back;explain how he had managed it;drew pictures

第三部分(para.4)

graduated;presented his possession;picture of a bright yellow sun;brightness

38.B。本句中Joe struggled day and night说明他很努力,后面的but提示虽然努力了,但是没有见效(work),所以选B.

40.A。根据the thunder won the battle for their attention可知雷声吸引了学生的注意力,也就是学生们不能集中注意 (concentrate),所以选A。

44.B。在下一个段落中的the picture of a bright yellow sun,以及except for Joe可知别的孩子画的都是暗淡颜色的画,只有Joe的画是明亮的。

48.A。 wake up to 意识到。
